The southernmost Electoral Area of the Regional District of Nanaimo, (Area A) adopted an Official Community Plan in 2011 that included the designation of an 8.5 acre parcel in Cedar for a ‘model sustainable neighbourhood’. Greenplan led efforts to create this sustainable neighbourhood  and the required zoning amendment application was initiated. In 2014, due to unfortunate circumstances, the property owner had to stop the project and subsequently list the property for sale.

Last week, the property was purchased with the full intention to set the precedent the OCP had encouraged. Greenplan is again honored to provide leadership on the project, knowing its success will be a measure of the team we assemble to create this precedent setting sustainable and resilient, low footprint community.

Upon reflecting on what appeared to be lost years for this vision, from 2014 to now, I realize now this was a blessing and a good life lesson in patience. Global research and development is booming in all aspects of sustainable living and many of these recent innovations will now be central to our project in Cedar. More importantly, over the last few years, I have met some exceptionally talented and equally passionate people compelled to showcase sustainable living options. We have the makings of a great team. Now, It’s time to bring vision to reality.
